چکیده
The paper considers the consensus problem in a partially synchronous system with Byzantine processes. In this context, the literature distinguishes authenticated Byzantine faults, where messages can be signed by the sending process (with the assumption that the signature cannot be forged by any other process), and Byzantine faults, where there is no mechanism for signatures (but the receiver of a message knows the identity of the sender). The paper proposes an abstraction called weak interactive consistency (WIC ) that unifies consensus algorithms with and without signed messages. WIC can be implemented with and without

Unifying Byzantine Consensus Algorithms with Weak Interactive Consistency (Full Version)
The paper considers the consensus problem in a partially synchronous system with Byzantine processes. In this context, the literature distinguishes (1) authenticated Byzantine faults, where messages can be signed by the sending process (with the assumption that the signature cannot be forged by any other process), and (2) Byzantine faults, where there is no mechanism for signatures (but the rec...
متن کاملPractical Asynchronous Interactive Consistency
Interactive consistency is the problem in which n nodes, where up to t may be byzantine, each with its own private value, run an algorithm that allows all non-faulty nodes to infer the values of each other node. This problem is relevant to critical applications that rely on the combination of the opinions of multiple peers to provide a service. Examples include monitoring a content source to pr...
متن کاملByzantine Fault Detectors for Solving Consensus
Unreliable fault detectors can be defined in terms of completeness and accuracy properties and can be used to solve the consensus problem in asynchronous distributed systems that are subject to crash faults. We extend this result to asynchronous distributed systems that are subject to Byzantine faults. First, we define and categorize Byzantine faults. We then define two new completeness propert...
متن کاملBosco: One-Step Byzantine Asynchronous Consensus
Asynchronous Byzantine consensus algorithms are an important primitive for building Byzantine fault-tolerant systems. Algorithms for Byzantine consensus typically require at least two communication steps for decision; in many systems, this imposes a significant performance overhead. In this paper, we show that it is possible to design Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus algorithms that decide in...
متن کاملInteractive Consistency Algorithms based on Voting and Error-correcting Codes
This paper presents a new class of synchronous deterministic non-authenticated algorithms for reaching interactive consistency (Byzantine agreement). The algorithms are based on voting and error-correcting codes and require considerably less data communication than the original algorithm, whereas the number of rounds and the number of modules meet the minimum bounds. These algorithm based on vo...
